"Can lens implants correct for astigmatism and are dry eyes a risk factor for this surgery?"
Dear Dr. Demers,
Can Intraocular lens implants correct for astigmatism? I have high myopia with some astigmatism. Because I have dry eyes I do not feel comfortable with Lasik surgery because of the risk of developing severe dry eyes. Are dry eyes a risk factor in lens implant surgery?
Any information you could give to me would be helpful.
Thanks,
Barbara M.
Dear Barbara,
Lasik surgery can exacerbate dry eyes in susceptible individuals. However, intraocular surgery can also lead to unwanted complications. In myopes, risks of retinal detachment after clear lens extraction are not insignificant (5-10%), and may lead to severe visual loss. Intraocular surgery usually does not lead to dry eyes. There is an intraocular on the market which also corrects for astigmatism. It is the Staar Surgical Toric Lens. It may correct up to 2-3 D of astigmatism.
