Angelina's lips -- ''maddeningly'' beautiful?

By Robin Merrill Lorenzo
Here are some quick facts about collagen:
- Collagen injections are one of the top 10 most popular forms of plastic surgery: 45,851 people had the procedure done in 1998, a 34% increase over 1996.**
- Collagen Replacement Treatments were approved by the FDA in 1981.
- Injectible fillers - in addition to bovine-based injectibles, there are many other types of fillers available in the US and abroad, such as those made from human collagen or fat.
Bovine-based injectible fillers
- Collagen: Collagen corporation makes two brands of injectible fillers Zyderm® and Zyplast®. Both are natural substances derived from purified bovine (cow) collagen suspended in a saline and lidocaine mixture. Zyderm is shorter-acting and made from a finer grain, so it can be injected closer to the skin. But it is reabsorbed quicker. Zyplast is lumpier and thicker, so it can only be injected deeper in the skin. But it lasts longer.
- NewFill: Bovine collagen suspended in saline. The same as U.S. Zyderm Collagen but not approved by the FDA for use in the US.
- Restoplast Suspended bovine collagen: The same as U.S. Collagen but made in Europe and not available in the US.
