In an attempt to quell the recent reports in the media about unsafe liposuction, The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)
issued guidelines for safe liposuction today in New York.
Included in the report, the ASAPS said that it is critical for patients to:
- Understand the limitations of a liposuction procedure.
- Don't try to do too much at once.
- Provide an accurate medical history
- Discuss the liposuction procedure thoroughly.
- Understand the risks associated with liposuction.
- Plan adequate aftercare.
- Plan adequate recovery time after your liposuctioon procedure.
- Check your doctor's credentials.
- Check your doctor's hospital privileges.
- Check for facility accreditation.
ASAPS pointed out that in its history, liposuction has enjoyed a relatively high level of safety, yet with uncertified doctors and increased fat being removed due to new technology, that dangers in liposuction procedures may persist.
