As a child I was quite cute and I received a lot of attention, however, once I hit puberty, my nose began to grow out of control. By the time I was 15, I was sporting a typical Jewish nose (skinny nose with a large "bump" slightly below the top of the nose). I was very embarrassed of my appearance and did whatever was necessary in order to ensure that my nose was hidden from the public - I grew very long bangs and covered half my face with them! At this point my self-esteem was extremely low and I was always conscious of my big, protruding nose.

I pleaded with my parents to have a nose job, but they said that I had to wait a few years after my first period until I could have cosmetic surgery. At the age of 17 I had a consultation with a plastic surgeon in Montreal - it cost $100 and the appointment lasted 15 minutes. A few months later I had the operation (at a private clinic), which lasted 1 hour. I was actually very excited and couldn't wait to have the operation. I stayed in the clinic for 2 hours and then I went home to rest. I felt no pain, just minor discomfort and nausea (due to the anesthetic).

It was difficult to sneeze and laugh during the first week and I had yellow bags under my eyes and around my nose. Within 2 weeks, the gauze in my nose and the cast were removed and the discolouring had disappeared. I was told that my nose would transform slightly over the next few months and that its true shape would only be apparent in 1 year. I was so happy to have a bumpless nose that I really didn't care about this transformation process.

It is now 10 years since the surgery and I feel as though I was born with the nose I now have. Having a nose job was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I have never had any regrets.

About 70 percent of young women try to lose weight. That dissatisfaction with their body weight stays with them into adulthood.
