I started noticing a mole on the back of my head, on the scalp. Of course, I had the mole for quite some time. It's one of those things you just don't notice until it becomes a liability.
I noticed, it was quite painful. I was at the hairdresser's, and she snagged her scissors on the mole. No great damage, but I noticed. Also, for some reason, the mole seemed to be getting larger over the years, as I had to start warning the hairdresser that there was a mole there. Otherwise, a too short haircut would show the mole. Also, my comb was starting to snag on the mole when I was combing.
So I decided to have it removed. It consisted of two visits: the consultation and the actual procedure. The consultation was fairly straightforward, just to evaluate what needed to be done.
The procedure was also fairly simple, although the doctor said he needed to shave the immediate area. I, of course, objected, as this would be quite unsightly for a long time until the hair grew back. So, I insisted he not shave the area, and he said that he would try to perform the procedure without this being necessary. He was successful.
The procedure itself consists of local anesthesia by injection. The first one stings a bit, but after that you don't feel a thing. The mole is then excised with a scalpel. It is then closed and sutured. It took approximately 30 minutes to do the whole thing.
The recovery was fairly short. Other than having to wear a small bandage for a day, the wound healed within a week. The doctor gave me an antibiotic paste to apply every morning to prevent infection. Don't get a haircut during this time! There was some sensitivity for a couple of days, but that soon passed. I am very happy with the results.
One last word: shaving around the mole is often unnecessary. So insist on not having it done!
