I had a great lasik experience. As for the fears, the only thing I can say is just make sure you have a really good doctor who practices at a really good facility. I went to one of the University of Utah facilities.
They really made me feel like I was in very professional and capable hands. I am just so happy with the whole experience.
As for the procedure itself, I was really scared when I went it. Once I was in the room though, all the staff there were really helpful, holding my hand, giving me a stuffed animal to squeeze, talking me through the operation (no drugs and you are wide awake).
You just concentrate on a point marked by a red dot and the thing is over in a few minutes. You wear big nasty goggle type sunglasses for a day, and by the next couple of days after that, your vision is totally clear and you love life (you do have to follow regimented eye drop treatments several times a day). I would suggest doing tons of research on your doctor first before you go in.
Visit the facility, meet with not just the doctor, but try to get a sense of the environment in the office. The attitude of the support staff speaks volumes. If they don't want to spend time with you, or they are too hurried, I would be a little concerned. Also, follow all of the instructions. I found out some people blow off the eyedrops or don't protect their eyes after and then wonder why they have complications.

About 70 percent of young women try to lose weight. That dissatisfaction with their body weight stays with them into adulthood.
